Big-D Construction Projects Acknowledged as Best of 2009 by Mountain States Construction Magazine

Eight Projects Result in Record Number of Awards

SALT LAKE CITY – December 21, 2009 —Eight Big-D Construction (www.big-d.com) projects were recently recognized by Mountain States Construction Magazine in its annual “Best of ’09/Recognizing Excellence in Design and Construction Awards.” The eight awards—a new record for the publication’s awards—included four top honors for “Best of ‘09” and four “Merit” Awards.

There were 104 project entries submitted and 36 total awards given, including the eight for the following Big-D projects:

BEST OF '09 AWARDS

Swaner Eco Center – Green Building

A LEED® Platinum, 10,000 square foot facility that features exhibits, a contemporary theater, classrooms, a gift shop, an interactive climbing wall, a 400-foot pier, two decks and a 4-story tower that overlooks 1200 acres of land (wetland, lowland, upland and stream habitat) owned and permanently protected by Swaner.

Project Jayhawk – Industrial

A new 220,000 square foot milk receiving and processing plant owned by Idaho Milk Products and located in Jerome, ID. The plant processes more than 3 million pounds of milk per day.

University of Utah Red Butte Garden Rose Garden & Pavilion – Landscape/Urban Design

A new concert pavilion for Red Butte Gardens, complete with supporting restrooms and a rose garden.

The Children’s Center – Renovation/Restoration

A LEED® Silver (anticipated), 52,000 square foot historic renovation of the existing building (previously the Oquirrh School) into new office space, observation rooms, conference rooms and meeting space for the Children’s Center, a non-profit organization providing mental healthcare for pre-school children.

MERIT AWARDS

Newpark Town Center – Retail

A Live/Work/Play community located 6 miles from Old Town Park City. This LEED® Silver Neighborhood Development consists of four retail buildings and two parking structures, as well as a Best Buy store.

AIA Utah Headquarters – Interior Design TI

A LEED® Platinum (anticipated) primary meeting and administrative space for the Utah Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. It also is intended as a demonstration of AIA’s commitment to sustainability both through its design, as well as the interactive display wall near the office entrance.

Center for Advanced Energy Studies – Higher Education/Research

A 55,633 square-foot, 2-story, LEED®® Gold research facility located on the Idaho State University campus.

Utah Botanical Center Wetland Discovery Point – Green Building

A LEED® Platinum Certified, indoor-outdoor learning experience for visitors of the Utah Botanical Center (UBC). The facility provides many educational programs at the Utah Botanical Center for Utah State University.

The annual competition recognizes construction excellence in projects from Utah,

Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. Individual projects received awards based on their complexity, innovation, quality, contribution to the community and aesthetics.
