Big-D Construction Completes John R. Park Renovation at University of Utah

U of U John R. Park Building Renovation Complete

SALT LAKE CITY – May 12, 2009 – Big-D Construction recently completed a historic renovation of the 63,980 square foot John R. Park Building on the campus of the University of Utah. The firm teamed with MJSA Architects for the project.

The John R. Park building, located at the top of President’s Circle, has been the campus administration building since its original construction in 1914. Named after the university’s first president, John Rockey Park, M.D., the building houses the office of the current University of Utah president, Michael K. Young.

The work completed on the landmark building includes:

  • An exterior renovation, including significant restoration to the 95-year-old exterior elements. Historic materials were carefully cleaned and repaired or replaced. Severely deteriorated limestone, which was originally quarried in Sanpete County, Utah, was patched with matching repair mortars, as well as a more durable limestone from Wisconsin. The decorative parapet was entirely rebuilt with a new stainless steel structure.
  • A seismic upgrade to the building roof, pillars and attic.
  • A complete new roof system was installed along with all new copper sheet metal flashings, an addition that will protect more surfaces, help the building shed water and preserve the refurbished limestone.
  • Many historic windows were either restored or received new sash with insulated glazing, while all other windows received minor repairs and paint.
  • Fire protection systems, both detection/notification and sprinklers, were installed in a majority of interior spaces.
  • Restored granite stair treads and new granite pavers beneath the portico of the front entry were installed.
  • The bronze statue of John R. Park was fully restored and reinstalled on a new, matching terra cotta pedestal.
