At a time when federal buildings throughout the nation are averaging $200/sf to build (and most state courts are averaging $150/sf), the 420,000 square foot Scott M. Matheson Courts Complex is a testimony to the effectiveness of the design-build process. (The total cost was approximately $115/sf.)



This project -- the State of Utah’s largest public building since the construction of the Capitol -- rises five stories (with three levels of underground parking). The rotunda flooring is turned and set in a diamond pattern with traditional/classical treatment of stone (a process used in the Louvre in Paris). Nickel Silver -- used in only a few select projects worldwide, and chosen for its unique brass/aluminum coloration -- was used to accent the light fixtures and interior elements. Cherry wood is used throughout the facility, while judges’ benches are inlaid with stone and matching borders.



Located below the facility is a 300,000 square foot 3-level secure parking garage. Parking level 1 includes 254 of staff secured parking; parking level 2 provides 275 stalls for the public; parking level 3 is exclusively for judicial, accommodating 74 stalls.
