The Conway Park Sports Dome is an air-supported multi-sport facility consisting of an inflatable membrane and a CMU support building. Big-D constructed the 4,354-sf Support Structure which provides ancillary functions to dome facility. This permanent support building was constructed with a steel frame roof and burnished finished masonry block to enhance the interior wall surfaces. Spaces include a concessions area, office space, gathering room, visitors lounge, locker rooms and other sports program spaces. It also includes utility and storage areas, and patron restrooms. Quality control during construction was critical as the common wall between the support building and the inflatable membrane structure be airtight. Due to the unique nature of the project, Big-D was repeatedly challenged to develop creative problem-solving strategies. Because of long lead times for construction materials, the project team made the decision to utilize steel bar joists rather than steel beams and provided temporary fire alarm system because of supply chain issues.
